Helmut Bieler-Wendt studied violin, piano, music theory, improvisation and composition at the University of Music Karlsruhe with Hans Börner, Günter Reinhold, Eugen Werner Velte and Wolfgang Rihm. Furthermore he completed courses with Johannes Fritsch (contemporary music and improvisation), Michael Ranta (improvisation and asiatic music) and Peter Ausländer (experimental musical theater, dance). 1988 he took his artistic final examination with Wolfgang Rihm.
Helmut Bieler-Wendt received scholarships of Karlsruhe and Darmstadt, of the ministry for science Baden-Wuerttemberg and the promoting community of German art. Since 1976 he works as a musician and composer in different formations.
Projects and concerts

Since 1976, he has operated as a musician in the open field between improvisation and concept composition—without a safety net, driven by a clear appetite for friction, risk, and boundary shifts. His work unfolds across a wide range of formations, as well as in his role as a composer with a pronounced affinity for interdisciplinary approaches, music theatre, and stage music.
Since 1979, he has continuously worked at Jugendhof Vlotho, engaging with music, improvisation, and music theatre—not as curriculum, but as practice. Until 1989, he also taught at the Karlsruhe University of Music. His teaching leads him through festivals, universities, and educational contexts—wherever musical certainties are allowed to falter.
Since the mid-1980s, he has expanded his practice to include tape music, radio pieces, sound installations, and multivision works. Initial realizations at ZKM Karlsruhe mark the beginning of an ongoing exploration of sound as space, material, and state. Releases on CD and video follow—traces of a body of work that refuses to settle.
Since 1998, he has been a board member of the Institute for New Music and Music Education in Darmstadt, and since 2004 its chairman—not as an administrator, but as an instigator within a traditionally codified field.
He was a member of THE BLECH from 1989 – 1996.

Geboren 1956, lebt als Komponist und freischaffender Musiker in Regensburg.
Studium an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe (Violine, Klavier, Musiktheorie, Improvisation, Komposition) bei Hans Börner, Günter Reinhold, Eugen Werner Velte, Peter-Michael Riehm und Wolfgang Rihm. Studien bei Johannes Fritsch (Neue Musik und Improvisation), Michael Ranta (Improvisation und Asiatische Musik), sowie Peter Ausländer (Experimentelles Musiktheater, Tanz) rundeten seine Ausbildung ab.

Seit 1976 bewegt er sich als Musiker im offenen Feld zwischen Improvisation und Konzept-Komposition – ohne Sicherheitsnetz, mit einer klaren Lust an Reibung, Risiko und Grenzverschiebung. Seine Arbeiten entstehen in unterschiedlichsten Formationen und als Komponist mit ausgeprägter Neigung zu interdisziplinären Setzungen, Musiktheater und Bühnenmusik.
Seit 1979 vermittelt er am Jugendhof Vlotho kontinuierlich Musik, Improvisation und Musiktheater – nicht als Lehrstoff, sondern als Praxis. Bis 1989 auch an der Musikhochschule Karlsruhe. Seine Lehrtätigkeit führt ihn durch Festivals, Hochschulen und Bildungseinrichtungen – immer dorthin, wo musikalische Gewissheiten ins Wanken geraten dürfen.
Seit Mitte der 1980er Jahre erweitert er sein Arbeiten um Tonbandmusik, Hörstücke, Klanginstallationen und Multivisionen. Erste Realisationen am ZKM Karlsruhe markieren den Beginn einer konsequenten Auseinandersetzung mit Klang als Raum, Material und Zustand. Veröffentlichungen auf CD und Video folgen – Dokumente eines Denkens, das sich nicht beruhigt.
Seit 1998 wirkt er im Vorstand des Instituts für Neue Musik und Musikerziehung in Darmstadt, seit 2004 als dessen Vorsitzender – als Impulsgeber innerhalb eines traditionell aufgeladenen Feldes.
Aufführungen seiner Kompositionen
Deutschland, Österreich, Kroatien, Italien, Spanien, Frankreich, Holland, Japan und Südamerika, und sind zum überwiegenden Teil vom Rundfunk produziert worden (SDR, SWR, HR, SR, WDR).
Konzertreisen
Deutschland, nach Ost- und Westeuropa, Südamerika, Kanada, Mexiko, Japan und Korea.
Veröffentlichungen
Seit 1978 etwa 25 LPs und CDs.
